The Escapist
It looks like The Escapist, the fictional comic book created by the fictional protagonists of Michael Chabon’s The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay, is about to become a reality:
“Michael Chabon Presents: Adventures of The Escapist” No. 1 debuts this month, courtesy of Dark Horse Comics. Like the ’40s comic books it evokes, it’s a whopping 80-pager (but don’t expect it to be 10 cents, like in the ’40s – try $8.95).The conceit of the series, like the novel, is that The Escapist really has been published since the ’40s, and that Kavalier and Clay were real people. As Chabon writes in a Dark Horse press release:
“When I first began my research into the careers of Joe Kavalier and Sam Clay, their classic creations had lapsed into near-total obscurity. I’m delighted and very grateful that Dark Horse has decided to breathe new life into these grand old characters.”
In other news, look for the film version of The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay (scripted by Chabon) sometime in 2004. (Thanks to MoorishGirl for the link.)
