Nonverbal Dictionary
Check out David Givens’ Nonverbal Dictionary of Gestures, Signs & Body Language Clues (“From Adam’s-Apple-Jump to Zygomatic Smile“) for a rigorous and ambitious study how we communicate without words. Though I agree with most of the comments in this LanguageHat thread, which dispute the assumption that nonverbal signals can be ascribed universal meanings, this doesn’t make the dictionary any less interesting or valuable as a descriptive, if ultimately and inevitably limited, resource.
