Gender Genie
The Gender Genie is based on the assumption that female writers “use more pronouns (I, you, she, their, myself)” and males “prefer words that identify or determine nouns (a, the, that) and words that quantify them (one, two, more).” Armed with this theory, this web site describes itself like this:
Inspired by an article in The New York Times Magazine, the Gender Genie uses a simplified version of an algorithm developed by Moshe Koppel, Bar-Ilan University in Israel, and Shlomo Argamon, Illinois Institute of Technology, to predict the gender of an author. Read more at nature.com.
Perhaps I just write like a woman, but it incorrectly assumed that I was female, twice, based on two different blog submissions. Otherwise, it boasts a fairly high success rate. I’d be interested to hear from others. Did it correctly identify you?
